Elmer, everyone's favourite elephant

The students have been learning all about the ‘Ee’ sound and the ‘er’ digraph so we thought this was a great opportunity to introduce everyone’s favourite patchwork elephant, Elmer! Elmer has such wonderful colours that we felt it only natural to follow up the books with some bright artwork.

Here are some Elmer elephants...

and another one...

Students really enjoyed drawing their own Elmer’s using bright pastels. Some students even made stuffed Elmer elephants and beautifully decorted them using powder paint, patterned paper and sequins.

We paired this extremely fun activity with some poetry writing. The students produced some wonderful pieces and were very proud of their work.
What an enjoyable activity!

P is for Penguin

How gorgeous are these paper bag penguins!

Kate had a lovely time making them with our preps. After reading a big book all about penguins, these lovely little creatures have formed the basis for lots of writing activities.  Here are some facts that some of the Prep children wrote....

and here's another one...
This writing is going to be published along with some opinions about Penguins...so stay tuned...might be a couple of weeks away!

Wonderful Woven Whales

What a colourful display!

Kate made these very cute whales while teaching her class about the letter 'w'.

They also wrote words beginning with 'w' and had them splashing around as water drops.

PEG? What's that?

PEG stands for 'Preps Explore Galore' and it's our version of a personalised, investigative, play-based programme designed to improve our students' outcomes in Oral Language skills and Writing. We run PEG three times a week and we set up various stations in all our Prep classrooms (and the hallway) and our students are free to explore wherever they choose according to their interests.
Here is a peek at one of our stations that proved to be very popular.  Very simple to set up, yet it provided countless hours of experimenting, discovering and ....fun!

Sorry about the photo quality but you get the idea!  Basically, it's a couple of clear containers filled with water and some food dye (inside the plastic container in the centre of the table).  The students loved using the eye droppers to add colour to the water and watching what happens.

Such a simple idea that led to many interesting conversations.  We didn't get a photo, but when we stirred the water really fast and then added the colour, we could clearly see a whirlpool....highly entertaining and fascinating...the kind of thing you can do over and over again and not get sick of it (or so it seemed for our five year old friends!)
So, if you're looking for a simple experiment that doesn't require a huge amount of  preparation, this might just be the one for you! If you try it out in your classroom, we'd love to hear how it goes!

Busy Times

Wow! It's amazing how time flies! All of a sudden over a month has gone by and we haven't posted! So, we thought we'd show you some beautiful artwork made by our Preps after an excursion to the zoo.  These were made in three stages...first we painted the background habitats, then the animals.  After that the animals were cut out, stuck on and then the students added a few collage areas to their work.
How clever five year olds can be!

The students also had to think of an adjective to describe their animal...

What kind of follow up activities have you done after a trip to the zoo?

Welcome!

Hello There!
Welcome to Clever Poppits!  We are a group of primary school teachers wanting to use this space to share our teaching ideas and hopefully get some in return! We're quite new to the blogging world and we couldn't believe that thinking of a name would be so difficult!

We are looking forward to getting started.  Stay tuned for more to come...
